In the last couple of years, engine parts and
other ship supplies has increased in prices significantly more then in other areas ashore. Together with high fuel prices
and lower tourist flow for passenger ships, has forced ship owners and repair shops to look for cheaper spares in countries
with low labor cost. The result of can be a major disaster. Original parts made in the countries where Engines and other machinery
was manufactured, is badly copied by this countries as they are missing the testing result and specific drawing of originals.
The result can be serious brake downs with loss of revenue, maybe even ships charter. This also means problems like loss of
employees jobs and severe increase of work load for ships crew. As a formal warning to all Engineers, Marineserv Ltd.
like to give an suggestion to reduce the risk of this happening to your ship, on this page.
Also we welcome other ships Engineers experiance and advices on our discussion forum. We hope that this will help avoiding serious engine brake downs and save employers huge cost, and many crew's jobs at the
same time.
SUGESTION OF SPARE PART HANDLING.
We recommend
all Chief Engineers to keep a good record and watch carefully all new spares and engine parts received. The possibilities are
that the parts is copied and has slightly different measures then the original. This can not be spotted by sight, but by measure
all new arrived parts up against original parts. 0.10 of 1 mm can be fatal for your engine. We have also discovered that some
pistons have been metal sprayed to compensate for ware. After a while this metal will loose from piston surface and goes between
piston and liner, with catastrophic results.
We suggest all original parts to be measured carefully,
especially complete pistons and liners, but also piston rings, bearings and other parts. Then keep this record and compare
with all new received parts. Also keep record of suppliers and if it is recondition or not. Some of reconditioning methods
used today are directly dangerous.
